Back to Institute
Here are a series of recommendations that will help you prepare for the start of the academic year at the institute, and in particular for the institute's opening meeting.
The purpose of this session is to inform and motivate participants. It usually takes place before the start of each semester at the institute.
The opening meeting
The opening meeting is held in the units or institute centers no later than the weekend preceding the first class of the institute semester.
This meeting is supervised by the bishop or stake president. We suggest that you contact your leader in advance to discuss the agenda and how you can help.
Here is a sample agenda for this meeting (this is only a suggestion):
Opening hymn
Opening prayer
Welcome from the bishop, stake president, or designated individual.
Explanations of the semester program provided by the teacher:
► The course(s) taught
► The program of video conference courses (Zoom)
► The missionary preparation courses
► Invitation to register
Closing hymn
Closing prayer
Distribution of materials
Discussion of chosen options and class schedules.
Be sure to inform students about the year's program and what is expected of them.
Invite everyone
At the institute, we welcome all individuals between the ages of 18 and 35, whether single or married, students or non-students, church members or non-members (this information should also be shared with full-time missionaries so that they can bring their friends to the institute).
We welcome anyone who will be 18 years old before December 31 of the current year, including young people who have just completed the seminary cycle. The institute is therefore not reserved solely for young single adults.
It is not recommended that single adults over the age of 35 enroll in the institute. If there are requests from these adults to take an institute course, a separate class may be organized under the direction of the bishop. Seminaries and Institutes do not administer these classes.
You can obtain a list of individuals ages 18 to 35 in your unit directly from your ward clerk. Everyone on the list must be invited, without exception. We strongly recommend that you work in counsel with your unit leaders (the elders quorum and Relief Society presidencies).
Institute Registration
Institute registration is done online.
Institute students can register directly at MyInstitute.churchofjesuschrist.org using their LDS account username and password. This website allows institute students to track their progress in terms of class attendance. They can also indicate their progress in reading the assigned course material.
For non-member students or those who are unable to register online, institute registration will be done using a paper registration form. You can download this registration form from the Institute - Administrative Resources section under “Institute - Enrollment Campaign.”
Video conference courses (Zoom)
During the opening meeting, take the time to explain that if a student does not wish to attend the institute course you are teaching, they can register for one of the video conference courses delivered via Zoom.
To find out about the video conference courses on offer, visit the website: https://www.etudiants.seminaire-et-institut.org/.
The missionary preparation courses
At the opening meeting, please remind students of the following:
Young adults who are preparing to serve a full-time mission in the near future should register for and complete the missionary preparation course. There is a missionary preparation session available each semester at the institute. This course is conducted remotely (Zoom).
To learn about the video conference missionary preparation courses offered, visit the website: https://www.etudiants.seminaire-et-institut.org/.
The material to be distributed
The primary study material for both the teachers and the students is the Scriptures and the discourses of today's prophets.
The Scriptures are available online at this address: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures?lang=eng or in the Gospel Library app for mobile devices.
All teachers' or student's institute manuals are also available online on the Church website (Gospel Library --> Books and Lessons --> Institute) at this address: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/books-and-lessons/institute?lang=eng or in the Gospel Library app for mobile devices.
You will need to give each student the study calendar, which you will need to complete with the titles and dates of each lesson.
You will find the institute's generic study calendar under “Institute - Administrative Resources” in the “Calendar” section.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your administrative assistant or coordinator. You will find their contact details under “Contacts.”
